Christmas gift ideas for the lady in your life

The other day, I got into an unexpected fungua roho session with a friend on a car ride into town. For some reason or the other, he let it all out. He went on and on about his wife and all her faults.

According to him, his wife of five years, does completely nothing other than watching soaps and doing her nails. She does not make their bed or clean their bedroom; she does not wake up to prepare the kids for school; she does not cook, clean nor iron. And the worst crime, according to him, was the fact that even serving food — prepared by the house help — is a problem, she whines and make him feel like he is asking too much from her. He claimed the maid does everything.

As such, he was very hurt by his wife’s lack of interest to do ‘wifely’ things in the house, and thus, he was thinking about getting a second one.

Apparently though, we have left the very dark ages and walked into bright and brave new modern world, men still prefer the ‘traditional’ wife.

Keeping a man

And thus if you are a woman in today’s world and you have plans of keeping a man, the truth of the matter is that you have no option, but to have some knowledge on how to carry out certain chores. Honestly, if you cannot cook or clean and you call yourself a wife, then of what good are you?

Women, before you throw stones at me for being a traitor, lets reason together. Look, men are never going change unless you get a man from out of space or something.

Gender roles are not all bad; they help to bring some order into this very crazy world. And anybody who dishes out oppression mumbo jumbo theory of how gender roles are oppressive and unnecessary is clearly living in a bubble. That kind of thinking is the reason we have men today walking around with an overly active tear ducts, tight pink trousers, and believing they can be house husbands.

I had to express my disappointment in women who cannot cook or clean and believe being a home maker is a third grade job.

All I am saying is that a woman should at least, learn the art of home making — which entails cooking and cleaning. Reason being, if she cannot do the activities herself, she should be in a position to know whether whoever she assigned the chores to — the house girl — carried them out correctly. If a wife has to delegate duties, she must supervise and chip in where possible.

 Feminist

If you are a wife and you are in the habit of leaving all the household chores to the house girl, don’t blame her when your husband turns her into his second wife. Men, at times, get attracted to women who care for them not necessarily those that love them.

Feminist activism might be good and necessary, but the reality is, men prefer homemakers. It’s never negotiable, that much I know. The world has changed, and yes, we women are busy, but the day we hand over our homes to be run by house girls, let’s not cry foul when house girls become our co-wives.

How house girls become co-wives

Many people think boda-bodas are a menace to society. Yes, there may be a few rotten potatoes in the lot and perhaps they are a law unto themselves. But in most cases, they are modern day knights riding up on a metal horse to save the day.

Government, in its usual high handed way, has decided to play big bully with the little people. To access free prenatal in government facilities, mandatory HIV testing has to be done on both husband and wife.

Big bully failed to consider the consequences of asking a husband whose maxim in life is “ignorance is bliss”, to take a HIV test.

Nankabirwa is expecting her fourth baby. She was turned away from the government health facility in her neighborhood and told to come back with her husband for mandatory HIV testing and counseling, if she wanted to access free services.

Her husband is not the easiest man to deal with even on a good day, and broaching the subject got her a good thumping for accusing him of having HIV. Plan B, asking her brother-in-law to play the role of husband, was also a bust, as he wanted to be paid for his services in form of drinks at the local. The job fell to the boda-boda rider who only asked for Sh50 as a waiting fee for his troubles.

Hospital

To be a boda-boda, rider you have to be versatile. Robert my regular boda-boda guy once told me a story of taking a mad woman to Butabiika Mental Hospital. The woman needed to take her sister to Butabiika without alerting her. Reason being, she had escaped more than once when she got wind that her sister had intention of taking her to hospital.

She looked “normal” and soon, they were on their way.

Along the way, the “patient” sandwiched between Robert and her sister began to fondle him thinking he was her boyfriend, and told him it was good he was finally going to take her to his new I can only imagine how much steadiness and strength it took him not to ride the bike into oncoming traffic and cause an accident.

Much as women are willing to “use” boda-boda men, word on the street is that only a desperate woman would marry one. Recently, I had one of those lazy days where I was surfing the idiot box seeking entertainment.

I landed on a lonely-hearts TV show and had a Eureka moment. The women on the show appeared to be maids, shop attendants and waitresses. Their ideal husband was one with a job and earns a good salary — basically a corporate guy. Their ideal marriage entailed a pampered life — shopping, salon and more shopping — and a maid to the housework. When the presenter pointed out that most boda-boda operators earned good money, they said those are beneath their social class.

I guess the boda-boda guy is a stepping-stone for a good life. Because if you have ever hired one of these girls in your salon, shop or as a maid, they usually run off with the watchman, houseboy or boda-boda man whom she has been pilfering your stuff to impress.

Many women, secretly love boda-boda men perhaps because of their physical fitness and availability among other reasons—if the secret affairs reported between women and boda-boda men are anything to go by. But publicly pretend to hate them citing their low social class as a turn off.

Love-hate relationship between women and ‘boda boda’ men

Monday, November 25, 2013

There was pandemonium in Awasi town when a family man who had secretly been living in a lodging with a Form Four leaver got smoked out and paraded before members of the public. The man, who confessed of being a tractor driver from Koru, had been ‘dating’ the school girl for a while. The girl was a student in the nearby secondary school and had just sat for her last paper the Friday of November 15.

Excited after completing her exams, the girl threw caution to the wind and fell for her sugar daddy’s tricks. The man made all the plans — including booking a lodging where they were to live for a while — and even send her bus fare to Awasi, where they were to meet.

The hanky-panky went on for three days without the public noticing. On the fourth day, when they were supposed to be leaving, the girl had stepped out to shop for cosmetics. However, as she was going back to the lodging, hawk eyed members of the public got suspicious of her, as she kept looking over her shoulders.

Shocked with what such a shy beautiful girl would be doing in a lodging, a concerned member of the public decided to snoop on her. Together with others, he trailed her to the room.

“We wadhi wane ane gima nyako matin ni dhi omo e ute nindo gi. Samoro japuonj moro oore mondo obi onind kode (Let’s go and check what this small girl is going to do inside that room, maybe one of the school teachers lured her into coming into the room),” one of the men in the crowd was heard saying.

Pleading

The heaving public forced the occupants to open the door, and to their shock, they found the man in the room. To save face, he immediately began pleading with the public to release him, and not embarrass him since he has a wife.

“An gi dhako asau kik unjawa, weya uru adhi e oda ok achak atim tim kamae (Please forgive me, I’m a married man, don’t embarrass me and I will never repeat such an act again),” the man pleaded. An agitated older man in the crowd while admonishing the sugar daddy, slammed parents and accused them of laxity in their parenting.

“Three days after finishing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), some parents don’t care about the whereabouts of their children? “Some parents need to get serious. It’s time parents whose children haven’t showed up since finishing KCSE started knocking on lodgings in their respective counties,” he hissed.

He further warned young girl against being enticed by small gifts from older men, out to exploit them — sexually. Cornered to explain what she was doing in the lodging, the girl revealed that the man had lured her by promising to buy her gifts among them a phone worth ShI,500.

Sweet-talked

“Please don’t take us to the police, if my parents knew about this, they will kill me. This man paid my bus fare and sweet-talked me into this and promised to buy me a phone,” pleaded the girl.

The two were later released after persuading with the public to understand their respective predicaments at their homes. The embarrassment was enough punishment, or so the public thought.

Family Man cohabiting with school leaver busted in lodging

You’re in it. That warm wash of “not good enough” has taken over. It doesn’t matter how you get into shame; the trick is getting out. In one piece. Without sacrificing your authenticity. As a shame researcher, I know that the very best thing to do in the midst of a shame attack is totally counterintuitive: Practice courage and reach out! But here’s the tricky part about sharing your story: You can’t call just anyone. If you share your shame story with the wrong person, he or she can easily become one more piece of flying debris in your already dangerous shame storm. We want solid connection in a situation like this — something akin to a sturdy tree firmly planted in the ground. We definitely want to avoid the following:

 1. The friend who hears the story and actually feels shame for you. She gasps and confirms how horrified you should be. Then there is awkward silence. Then you have to make her feel better.

2.The friend who responds with sympathy (“I feel so sorry for you”) rather than empathy (“I get it, I feel with you, and I’ve been there”). If you want to see a shame cyclone turn deadly, throw one of these at it: “Oh, you poor thing.” Or, the incredibly passive-aggressive Southern version of sympathy, “Bless your heart.”

 3. The friend who needs you to be the pillar of worthiness and authenticity. She can’t help because she’s too disappointed in your imperfections. You’ve let her down.

4. The friend who is so uncomfortable with vulnerability that she scolds you: “How did you let this happen? What were you thinking?” Or she looks for someone to blame: “Who was that guy? We’ll kick his ass.”

 5. The friend who is all about making it better and, out of her own discomfort, refuses to acknowledge that you can actually be crazy and make terrible choices: “You’re exaggerating. It wasn’t that bad. You rock. You’re perfect. Everyone loves you.”

6. The friend who confuses connection with the opportunity to one-up you: “That’s nothing. Listen to what happened to me one time!”

Of course, we’re all capable of being friends like these — especially if someone tells us a story that gets right up in our own shame grill. We’re human, imperfect and vulnerable. It’s hard to practice compassion when we’re struggling with our authenticity or when our own worthiness is off-balance.

When we’re looking for compassion, we need someone who is deeply rooted, is able to bend and, most of all, embraces us for our strengths and struggles. We need to honor our struggle by sharing it with someone who has earned the right to hear it. When we’re looking for compassion, it’s about connecting with the right person at the right time about the right issue. We need a move-a-body friend.

A year or two ago, my good friend called, and as soon as I said, “Hello!” she said, “You’re a friend who would move a body.” I could tell by her voice that she was serious. I lowered my voice and whispered, “What does that mean?”

She said that one of her sister’s close friends had called her sister and asked her to help her move her mom. The friend’s mother, who was apparently only invited to visit once a year, struggled with alcoholism. When my friend’s sister’s friend came home from work, her mother was passed out drunk on the sofa. It was 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and the kids would be busting through the front door any minute. She called because she physically needed help moving her mother.

I let out a deep sigh and said, “Yes. You could definitely call me.” Then she said one of the kindest things that anyone has ever said to me. She explained: “I’d call you because you would come right away, give me a hug, never look judgmental or disapproving or disgusted. And then you’d say, ‘Let’s do this.’ “The next day, when you saw my mom at the park or the soccer game, you’d be kind and respectful. “And most of all, it would never cross my mind to say something to you like ‘Please don’t tell anyone.’ You don’t do that.”  -standardmedia -->

What sexual things should everyone experience before they die? And how does someone who married young rank against those who didn't?
I got married at 25 and started dating my husband seriously at 23.
Prior to that, I was in two very serious relationships (both of which ended in engagements) over several years and those three men sum up the grand total of my sexual experience. But what I lack in number of partners, I like to think I make up for in enthusiasm and can-do excitement.
I know I lucked out when I met Rob, so I would trade a few wild and crazy sexual experiences for the really good one of meeting my soul mate at 23 (actually, we met at 10) -- but this idea of "sexual bucket lists" does intrigue me.
Ninety percent of these can be done in the context of a loving, safe marriage (like mine). The rest, alas, I will have to leave to the single gals among us. But here is a list of 50 sexual must-dos before you die.

  21. Light spanking
  22. Read erotica
  23. Play strip poker/Monopoly/card game
  24. Sex in the shower
  25. Sex standing up against a wall
  26. Sex with no kissing
  27. Sex in the pitch black
  28. Sex in the broad daylight
  29. Making out with no sex long after you're no longer a virgin
  30. Sex in a tent in the wilderness

The Sexual Bucket List: 50 Things to Do Sexually Before You Die

#1 When to See a Doctor

If you've heeded all these tips and are still having chronic problems falling asleep or staying asleep, you should probably see a sleep doctor or sleep therapist. Some symptoms for which you should DEFINITELY see a specialist include:

-Chronic sleepiness and fatigue regardless of how much you sleep
-Problems breathing at night, including loud snoring or paused breath
-Constant waking headaches
-Sleep paralysis
-Narcolepsy (falling asleep unexpectedly)

#2 Keep Your Cool

A lot of people like to keep their bedroom warm and comfortable, but if you want to fall asleep quick and stay asleep, your bedroom should actually be quite cool. Around 60-65 degrees Farenheit is the optimal temperature; cold air makes you sleepy and makes it less likely that you'll wake up with night sweats.

#3 Hit the Lights

For thousands of years humans went to bed when the sun went down and woke up with the sunrise. It's no surprise that our bodies are accustomed to sleeping in the dark and we are sensitive to changes in light. Therefore when bedtime is nigh, you should avoid as much artificial light as possible. Turn the lights in your room way down low for about an hour before you go to sleep, and avoid looking at electronic screens, staring at an artificial light right before bed can really throw you off (yes this includes your phone!)

#4 Meditate

Many people who suffer from insomnia report that they can't 'turn off' their mind and have racing thoughts when they are trying to go to sleep. If you have this problem, meditation can be a huge help. You'll want to try what is called 'vipassana' meditation, and it's essentially an exercise is stopping your thoughts and clearing your mind.

#5 Eat to Sleep

Your eating habits could be part of the reason you're not sleeping well at night. If you go to bed on a full stomach, you are going to have a harder time falling asleep and you are more likely to have interrupted sleep. You should eat dinner early; at least three hours before going to bed.

Conversely going to bed starving can affect your sleep as well, it's okay to have a small snack about an hour before bedtime; avoid high-carb foods. A few slices of cold cut turkey or a warm glass of milk will fight hunger and help you sleep better.

#6 Have a Bedtime Ritual

Another great way to condition your body to fall asleep quickly is to have a short but regular bedtime ritual that you perform every night before bed. It could be reading for fifteen minutes, a short breathing exercise, brushing your hair, making a to-do list for the next day, or stretching. If you create a ritual like this and stick to it, after a while this activity will let your body know that it's bed time and you will fall asleep easier.

#7 Don't Hang Out in Bed

If you are the type of person who likes to hang out in bed and do things like read, watch TV, do crosswords, or eat (gross!) you could be sabotaging the quality of your sleep by hanging out in bed. You should only be doing one thing in your bed, and that's sleep. This will condition your body to understand that once your head hits the pillow, it's go-time (go to sleep, that is).

#8 Keep a Regular Sleep Schedule

If you go to bed and wake up at different times every night, your body is going to be all kinds of confused. It's tempting to stay up late and sleep in on the weekends, but doing so will make it harder to fall asleep at night. If you go to bed and wake up at around the same time every day, your body will get used to this routine and it will be much easier to fall right to sleep.

#9 Exercise

This one should be a no-brainer, there are so many reasons to get regular exercise. In addition to the other benefits like living longer, feeling and looking better, and improved self-esteem, having a daily or semi-daily exercise routine has been shown to help you fall asleep faster. Just make sure not to exercise within two hours of bedtime: late night workouts can energize you and keep you awake.

#10 Stop Tossin' and Turnin'

Most of us strive to get our 7-8 hours of nightly sleep to keep healthy and energized. But are you getting the most out of your 8 hours? If you spend the first hour or two tossing and turning, you are likely to spend the night frustrated and wake up tired. If you don't fall asleep right away you are missing out on the benefits of a full night's sleep, but there are ways to break this cycle and ensure that when you go to sleep, you actually go to sleep.
